In June, Kim R. Simon enrolled in MCC ’s Direct Care program. “During my first week of classes I learned what the employers considered a valuable employee and how to have a successful interview.” From then on, Simon took on an intense six-week training course.

Shalimar Blakely, now 28, has faced many obstacles in her life. By the time she was 16 years-old, she was already a mother of two, on public assistance. Although Shalimar was an honor roll student, she was not motivated to continue school.

This summer, while white water rafting along the class III rapids of the French Broad River in NC, I remember thinking to myself, can I make it? Thanks to focus and hard work, I did. The experience is not unlike that of many of our participants who work so hard to reach their goals. They, and we, thank you for your support.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

CTI Default Rate - CTI’s preliminary default rate (non-payment on student loans) was 3.5%, very low in the industry. The typical default rate for schools like CTI is 9%. (A school can lose accreditation if the rate reaches 25%.)

MCC welcomes New Employees Ayana Pilgrim-Brown, CTI Admissions Manager; Tracy Jenish , Chief Information Officer; Allyson Joyner, Student Advisor; Junious Rhone , AOS Instructor; Angela Smart , Director of Employment Services; and Nikki Benson-Watlington, CTI Student Advisor.

New Grants - MCC recently received a three year $30,000 unrestricted grant from the Independence Foundation. We also received a $15,000 pledge from Lincoln Financial Group to support STRIVE. This recent gift brings Lincoln Financials’ total contribution to MCC to $50,000, a significant measure of Lincoln’s commitment to the Philadelphia community.

Khadijah Jones - a 2003 CTI Graduate, was recently promoted to Assistant Director at the Campaign for Working Families. She is responsible for managing 21 tax sites, 25 site managers, 5 Tech Teams, committees and training facilities.

Long-time MCC Volunteer Featured in Local Media-- Len Caldwell, a former MCC Board member, appears in the August 3 rd issue of the The Chestnut Hill Local. The article, “Hiller Fights Poverty in U.S. and South Africa ,” was part of an ongoing series on Chestnut Hill resident volunteers. Click Here to view the article.
